Alex Frost lecture.

Not going to lie I couldn’t really hear a lot of the lecture especially during the beginning as I came in a bit late and had to sit right at the top and the mic was kind of quiet, so I’m not entirely sure what he was saying a lot of the time. Which might contribute towards the fact that I don’t really have an opinion on his work, I honestly don’t really get it except for the fact that its quirky.

The underwater art of 'wet unboxing': why it's so mesmerising ...For instance, the piece where he does unboxing videos underwater, ye, it got viral which is kind of cool and an interesting thought to have artwork on that kind of meme culture social media platform. This could be something to think about for art I guess, but other than that, like what even was this. I get he was kind of raising awareness of mass consumerism, but i don't really think that the message was put across effective enough for a viewer to be like oh ye and take that kind of message away with them, if you get me. It seems more like he was kind of taking the mick out of certain areas of social media such as ridiculous unboxing videos. The only videos real connection to mass consumerism is when he mentioned the thought of these foods being on the go, making life more fluid, hence the use of water to play on this idea of fluidity. I just don't feel like this message was that well put across, honestly i don't really see the point. i think its probably more of a waste of food then anything else.

God, I feel like I’m being harsh.

On a more positive note I did really like the ghost space he made, which was an exhibition in storage lockers, made up of multiple artists. Including the likes of Laura Yuile who we had for a lecture last year. I really liked this idea of getting this group of artists to create an exhibition in any space they could find such as a storage locker and this is an interesting topic for me at the moment. As I am curating my own exhibition in my flat and hope to continue making shows.

P.S. I think the exhibition worked better in the storage container compared to the gallery space they got in Vienna.
