Patricia MacKinnon-Day

Throughout the lecture Patricia spoke about her influences and the processes in her practice. Patricia explained how she’s interested in real peoples, lives and places she then uses the materials found in the areas she’s working in exploring the use of materiality in her work.

When listening to Patricia explain her work I noticed how important research is in her practice. For instance, one of her pieces involved Patricia visiting a family’s old tailoring building, she searched around the place looking for inspiration. Patricia found the families chalk and ground it up and used it to make a lace design on the floor from a lace she also found in the tailor’s place.

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Patricia’s work personally but I can appreciate the excessive research and details that are involved in her practice.

Laura Yule

From the work Laura Yule showed us in the lecture I seen that a lot of her work uses specific materials like, pebbles, electrical appliances and manikins. There also seems to be an occurring theme with Laura's work which is the idea of how we are becoming too dependent on electrical appliances and social media.  The first project Laura spoke about was her on going work with pebble dashing. Firstly focusing on our dependence on everyday electronic devices, she showed an installation of appliances she found and managed to get for free at junk yards such as a Samsung television and fridges that she then pebble dashed almost freezing these appliances. Laura thought about how we use these appliances in how she positioned them. From this project Yule made a bigger series using the same techniques and thoughts. Gabrielle de la Puente (lecture and tutorial)

Gabrielle is only the bloody creator of the Output Gallery and I’m so psyched we got a lecture from her and I had a tutorial with her afterwards and it was so useful because I was literally in the middle of co-curating my own exhibition the ‘flat mat cat exhibition’, In fact I think meeting with Gabrielle was actually two days before the show. In the lecture Gabrielle discussed the Output galleries values such as wanting to get artists from and based in Liverpool involved and the importance of listening and taking suggestions from others (especially other artists), therefore shaping the identity of the gallery. I think this is amazing and I feel like I kind of related this back to my exhibition and how it was a mixture of multiple artists and art historians input to create the show we had and this definitely made the show what it was and not to toot my own horn, but it was a sick show.
