MA Students Lecture
This week our lecture was from 6 of the Fine Art MA students, each student gave us separate mini lectures one after another.
Mathew Merrick.
Well Mathew didn't actually lecture us at all as he was running late but had a video he wanted to show us and then decided he was only going to show the video with no other explanation. So I don't really have too much to say about his "lecture", but I didn't really like the video, I actually found it quite irritating as the voice over wasn't in time with the lips which for some reason really stressed me out. This may have been the effect he was going for in which case it worked.
Charlotte Hill.
Charlotte was the second student to lecture. Charlotte's main medium seemed to be acrylic painting's but the process of her practise and thoughts of these paintings where extremely interesting, almost giving the paintings another depth that I didn't see at first appearance. Charlotte Spoke about how she uses space, colour, shapes and narratives in her abstracted paintings. Explaining how she associates different colours with certain characteristics such as in the painting to the left, the orange is a protagonist. I found this interesting as its almost as though there are secret stories in these paintings.
Amy Zanders.
Amy Zanders began by showing a performance piece she had recently done, explaining that this was completely new to her practice and wants to explore this further. Amy began explaining how she ended up performing this piece, beginning with the inspiration coming from realising her own habits and rituals and researching further into this, which lead her to weaving a blanket. After this point she found herself stuck as she found no way to display the blanket effectively, which is when the idea of wearing this piece and creating a performance out of it began and she found she loved this new aspect of her practice. I found this useful in terms of my practice as I have recently began incorporating performance piece into my own work and have found myself extremely interested in the different development of performance piece as I am discovering my own.
Henry Chan.
Throughout Henry's lecture he spoke about his practice involving what he sees in the media, I also noticed in most of his work Henry aims for an aesthetic look and doesn't often allow freedom in his practice, as he finds it important to see each step ahead of him and follow this through. However he explained how he tries to experiment with different materials when creating his sculptures. To the left is my favourite work of Henry's which is a metal made sculpture of his updated version of Michael Angelo's painting of god reaching out to man, but in Henry's piece man held the middle finger to god. I found this piece interesting due to the use of humour in the work which wasn't really seen in the other works he showed us.
Angelo Madonna.
Angelo spoke about how he tries to leave himself open to experimenting as much as possible with his practice which leads him to often finding his work developing from things he experiences. He then went on to talk about an installation that was inspired from him finding a tower that used to ring a bell when the tide was too high, but the bell was broken. From this point onward I had no clue what was going on. On my notes I literally just wrote very scientific, very confused.
Sarah Stringer.
Instantly Sarah had everyone intrigued as she started the lecture by explaining how she didn't want to do a slide show and had decided to bring some of her works in to pass around the theatre and speak about the process of her work rather then the end result. As the lecture went on she spoke about how using natural materials are a big priority in her practice and often goes to the beach to collect most of her materials. She also finds that spontaneity is important in her work, explaining how anything can suddenly inspire her. One of her works she passed around was a resin sphere containing sand and other land like materials speaking about the conflict happening in Islam over the taking of land.
Overall this has been interesting hearing from the MA students especially as many of the works seem to be useful in my own practice and have now been talking to the MA students about developing some of my own works further, which has been extremely handy.
