Induction week

On no other course then fine art would your first task be to collect items by dumpster diving and stealing from the other courses. Basically quite quickly learning that rubbish is cool and that every other course in this building hates fine art students.

Task 1-The Rubbish.
So, we where doing some kind of cyanotype printing which is a type of printing which included the use of chemicals on materials and direct sunlight creating a reaction to change the colour or something, i'm not entirely sure what was going on but it was frikin cool. We done this process buy having a large piece of material soaked in whatever these chemicals are, something to do with cyanide i think and then we where told to get items which would hopefully leave interesting prints and outlines on the material, so we weren't just collecting rubbish for the fun of it. Later that day the groups came together with the material and figured out how we wanted our prints to look. We then lay the material outside in direct sunlight and placed our items as quick as possible. later on that week we would see the results of our prints once the materials had been washed out to heighten the colours or something. So we weren't just collecting rubbish for the fun of it.

Task 2- Art that's not art.
This days task was maybe not as weird but just as interesting. We where given a guided tour of two exhibitions of the Biennial and throughout the day we had to take pictures, but not of art. We had to take pictures of things that aren't necessarily art but could look like art. it was really interesting to walk around and find interesting things that many would walk past and it was amazing how different everyone's images where, really showing the diversity in the group. At the end of the day we selected just two of our images and sent them to be put on a slide show at the end of the week.

Just some of the images I took included a no parking sign which had googly eyes stuck on it, the corner of an old donuts trucks small metal trailer box thingy, a fence that had a contrast off large circles set onto of a fence with small metal circle cut out of the steel and broken down brick wall which had weeds and plants growing out of the cement.

Task 3- The party.
This day our fine art tutors where hosting a little bit of a party where they would cook some curry for us and our work from the induction week would be displayed. We did also have a task this day which was to make a container that we could eat the curry out of and make it out of something weird. I decided to use gold bars (the biscuits), cellotape and cocktail umbrellas just for decoration. I made a swimming pool like structure with the gold bars and used the cellotape to cover all of the gold bars, so i could eat the curry out of the container and then take away the cellotape to have gold bars as a shareable desert. the cocktail sticks where used to decorate the bowl, use as some kind of utensil and finally to give to others as hair pieces. I actually did eat the curry out of my creation and if i do say so myself it was the best god damn container there, everyone had some gold bars and some umbrellas in their hair, what more can you want. .

And that's the end of a weird induction week.
