Tutorial with 12o Collective

The 12o Collective is a group of artists based in London who have been running several projects for artists different to the typical. Rather than focusing on big exhibitions and building an artists cv they focus on creating a flexible, challenging and supportive environment for artists and their development.



Two members of the collective Kelly and Eva where running tutorial meetings in the university that together me and Amelia (AKA-friend, flat mate, collaborative partner) took part in.

Honestly, I got so involved in the conversation I completely forgot to take any notes and now I am struggling to remember everything that was said, but I remember they gave a lot of useful advice especially about shows. As at the time me and Amelia where preparing our show the ‘Flat, Mat, Cat exhibition’, as well as planning another exhibition focusing on the ideas of art and climate change/marine life. Due to the pandemic we have had to kind of put this exhibition to a halt. We discussed maybe doing something online but for this show there are certain elements of in person interaction we feel is important to be kept. Anyway, even though this exhibition has been put on pause in terms of dates, we are still working on this and this tutorial we had a while ago has been important to look back at when discussing the exhibition. The advice Kelly and Eva gave has had an important impact on our idea for the exhibition, for instance they had the suggestion of adding workshops, which is definitely an idea me and Amelia have been thinking about and we feel would add another interactive element to our work which may help the art have a greater impact on the audience. In terms of this show being Based around ideas of climate change and marine life they advised we contact scientist, ensuring we are giving out the right information, thinking about what we want the audience to get from the show and to ensure that the theme of the show runs throughout, which are thoughts we had been discussing anyway, so this advice is definitely helping us to ensure were taking a step in the right direction with the planning of this show.

Stephen Sutcliffe

In the lecture I realised that Stephan spoke more about his inspirations , thought processes and other people then he did talk about his own work, but this makes sense for his practice. Sutcliffe explained how growing up television and media/pop culture are a huge aspect in his relationship and understanding of art. Throughout the lecture Stephen when describing his work, he would explain the specific reasons and influences leading to works. For instance, for Stephan’s piece ‘AB…’ where he took an interview of Anthony Burgess and edited the video to be in alphabetical order. I thought this piece was so clever and witty its hilarious and before showing the video , Stephen spoke about how he tried to read this book ‘Alphabetical Africa’ by Walter Abish, which was placed in the top 10 of the hardest to finish books. Laura Yule

From the work Laura Yule showed us in the lecture I seen that a lot of her work uses specific materials like, pebbles, electrical appliances and manikins. There also seems to be an occurring theme with Laura's work which is the idea of how we are becoming too dependent on electrical appliances and social media.  The first project Laura spoke about was her on going work with pebble dashing. Firstly focusing on our dependence on everyday electronic devices, she showed an installation of appliances she found and managed to get for free at junk yards such as a Samsung television and fridges that she then pebble dashed almost freezing these appliances. Laura thought about how we use these appliances in how she positioned them. From this project Yule made a bigger series using the same techniques and thoughts. Jade Montserret

During the lecture I found myself really struggling to focus on what Jade was saying which was annoying because I really liked Jade's Work but in the lecture she presented a silent video in the background whilst she spoke from a sheet, which made me find it really hard to listen to her and properly focus, but I did try my best and learnt a lot about Jades inspirations and reasons for her work.  Jades work focuses on sexuality, race and intelligence, talking about black history, African-American experiences, performances of how whiteness dehumanises black stories and the structure of society. Many of Jades art features charcoal writings on gallery walls and the process of this piece itself is a performance piece that she does naked and records.
